传说中可实现持有者一切愿望的宝物——圣杯。而为了得到圣杯的仪式就被称为圣杯戦争。参加圣杯戦争的7名由圣杯选出的魔术师被称为御主（マスター，中文字幕线专区英文Master），中文字幕线专区与7名被称为从者（サーヴァント，英文Servant）的使魔订定契约。他们是由圣杯选择的七位英灵，被分为七个职阶，以使魔的身份被召唤出来。圣杯承认的使用者只有一个，御主（Master）一定得与七种职业的从者（Servant）之一立下契约，证明自己是有资格拥有圣杯的人。
