华灯初上的大都会上海滩，混混上海金星地产老板钱寿昌的专车遭到一伙持枪之人的袭击。枪声惊动正在附近大排档吃饭的法租界巡捕房探长钟朗（钟汉良 饰）及其搭档韩非（释小龙 饰），混混二人顶住火力出手相助，终于击退那伙歹徒，但对方的身手和逃跑时留下的奇怪数字引起钟朗的注意。次日一早，钱老板来到巡捕房致谢，他挖角不成，于是力邀钟朗过几天为他的五十大寿宴席担任保镖。钟朗和韩非拿着歹徒丢落的步枪求助医科大学女教授于胜男（齐芳 饰），进而发现更多疑点，他更断定钱老板隐藏了某些不可告人的事实。不久，寿宴如期在戒备森严的钱府举行，三教九流各路人等纷纷来到，热闹祥和的表象下，杀机慢慢腾起……

The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich; his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.
