1914年8月，类房当德国军队在法国北部取得进展时，类房四名10至15岁的男孩，吕西安、卢卡斯、路易吉和路德维希在撤离孤儿院时被留下。不久，与父母失散的小女孩露丝加入了他们的行列，他们决定使用千方百计也要到达中立国瑞士，于是一场毫无准备的冒险开始了。
