精神科医师劳伦斯意外失踪，南宋没有人知道他的去向，南宋然而院裡的精神病患麦克却似乎握有其失踪的线索。已为医院其他丑闻焦头烂额的主管格林医师，为了在消息曝光前了解失踪案件的来龙去脉，不惜牺牲圣诞假期、抛下家中妻女赶到医院，与麦克展开一场猫捉老鼠的密室解谜心战。改编自本片编剧尼可拉斯的同名舞台剧作〈Elephant Song〉，天才导演札维耶多蓝放下导演身分，与同样能演会编又导的导演查理斯毕南梅合作，于《忧伤大象之歌》饰演疯狂却聪颖的精神病患麦克，与布鲁斯格林伍德精彩对峙。两人在密室空间的来往诘问，随著主导权的转换游移，一层层揭露彼此不为人知的过去。

However, on Christmas Eve, he is visited by the doomed ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley that tells him that three spirits would visit him that night. The first one, the spirit of Christmas Past, recalls his miserable youth when he lost his only love due to his greed; the spirit of Christmas Present shows him the poor situation of Bob's family and how joyful life may be; and the spirit of Christmas Future shows his fate. Scrooge finds that life is good and time is too short and suddenly you are not there anymore, changing his behavior toward Christmas, Bob, his nephew and people in general.
