20世纪40年代，国产海内外都笼罩在战争的阴影之中，国产就被奴役和占领的华夏大地更是一片疮痍。善良而美丽的普通上海女工金妹（上官云珠 饰），在回家的路上遭受日寇欺凌。危难时刻她得到爱国青年孟南（周峰 饰）和李新群（黄宗英 饰）的救助。但这一事件给她带来巨大的阴影，金妹被厂方无情解雇，丈夫又遭到流氓毒打失明。苦难的生活逼迫她走向社会的最黑暗角落。另一方面，孟、李二人的朋友梁若英（沙莉 饰）此前与丈夫章玉良（赵丹 饰）离婚，另嫁他人过起养尊处优的太太生活。现在的丈夫投敌叛国，与孟、李他们截然对立，若英也面临重要的选择。本片根据田汉的同名话剧改编。

A young doctor grates at what he feels is the parson's interference in the scientific treatment of patients, and a mine owner resents Grey's protection of an old sharecropper whose small plot of land stands in the way of his continued mining.
