韦明是上海一所私立学校的音乐教师，狱蝶有时作曲和写小说，狱蝶她对出版公司的余海涛很有好感。学校有一个王博士已经结婚却经常骚扰韦明，韦明早已看透王博士的为人，。韦明的姐姐因为生活困顿带着韦明的女儿来到了上海，三人的生活很拮据，而此时王博士使诡计使得韦明被解雇。女儿生病了，韦明无奈只有卖身，却发现占有她的人是王博士。姐姐救下了自杀的韦明，女儿因不救夭折了。小报记者齐为德曾与韦明结怨，他把韦明自杀的消息登上了报纸，韦明看到了报纸知道自己小说出版了，这些激发了她活下去的勇气，但最终她还是不甘心地闭上了眼睛。
